Tomorrow will be Too Late | Call to Balance Natural Resources: Earth Overshoot Day
Each year, the global population is rapidly increasing while consumption habits are increasing at the same time. Consequently, natural resources are depleting at an equal pace. Earth Overshoot Day symbolizes the day when humanity globally exhausts the allocated resources for that year. The fact that this day falls earlier every year is proof that the resources on earth cannot be managed sustainably.
How is Earth Overshoot Day Determined?
The Global Footprint Network (GFN) tracks the depletion rate of natural resources on Earth by calculating the ecological footprint on an international scale. This calculation compares the natural resources used by humans for that year against the Earth's capacity to regenerate resources for that year.
Based on data recorded by the Global Footprint Network since 1961, the first Earth Overshoot Day was determined as December 25, 1971. In the 1980s, Earth Overshoot Day fell in the middle of December, but in recent years, this date has been announced to be in July and August. This trend indicates that Earth Overshoot Day is occurring earlier each year.
While Earth Overshoot Day might sound alarming, it can be seen as a warning sign and an essential tool on an international scale to increase environmental awareness and manage existing resources more sustainably.
What Can We Do to Postpone Earth Overshoot Day?
There are many steps that can be taken both individually and socially to postpone Earth Overshoot Day. Minimizing the carbon footprint is one of these.
Sustainable consumption: Reviewing consumption habits, reducing and recycling waste, and questioning the sustainability of each product consumed are big steps that can be taken individually.
Sustainable agriculture and food consumption: Sustainable agricultural practices, on the one hand, help protect soil and water resources, and on the other hand, contribute to environmentally friendly production processes. At the same time, reducing food waste and making more sustainable food choices will also help postpone Earth Overshoot Day.
Awareness and education: Raising society’s awareness and consciousness on environmental issues encourages every individual to adopt a sustainable lifestyle. For this reason, attending training to increase environmental awareness, conducting research on these issues and sharing them with the close circle are very important and effective in postponing Earth Overshoot Day to later dates.
Preferring renewable energy sources: In terms of energy, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and turning to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and geothermal will reduce the amount of carbon emissions emitted into the atmosphere, thus contributing to postponing the Earth Overshoot Day.
Preserving the existing ecosystem: Protecting the sustainability of existing forests and ecosystems and protecting biodiversity and natural life is also a critical point.
In conclusion, recognizing Earth Overshoot Day, which falls on an earlier date each passing year, as an important indicator and taking conscious steps today to take preventive measures is crucial to leave a more sustainable future for future generations.
