Manhattan Like You've Never Seen Before!

Manhattan Like You've Never Seen Before!

This remarkable work of art beautifully demonstrates the fusion of architecture and art, coming to life through the unique vision of Yutaka Sone, who hails from Shizuoka, Japan. Although he received his education in architecture, Yutaka Sone has channeled his passion into the world of sculpture and art, actively working across various disciplines, including sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, video, and performance art in Los Angeles.

Sone's marble project for New York City began to take shape in the late 1990s. Over the course of about twenty years, he used sources such as photography, Google Earth, and helicopter flights to capture the city's intricate details. The result is a captivating project that pushes the boundaries of what marble can achieve, giving birth to a cityscape that spans approximately 9 feet in length and 13 feet in height. Remarkably, the cityscape is only 3 centimeters high, constructed in a highly realistic scale.

Japanese artist Yutaka Sone plays with the power of art through proportional scaling in his creation. At first glance, the sculpture presents itself as a massive marble block, but it reveals a small, intricate urban landscape forming a single surface on top. Recognizing that this outward appearance corresponds to the familiar vertical cityscape allows viewers to better understand the scale of Manhattan. Incredibly, this 2.5-ton sculpture can be considered only a "miniature" compared to the real Manhattan island. The dominant design of the sculpture positions the city atop an abstract precipice.

Yutaka Sone's marble-made city creates an ambiguity between man-made wonders and the natural form of the island. Both grand and exquisitely graceful, this work of art invites diverse experiences through its surprises and the potential offered by the various forms of marble.

Thus, visitors to the Park Avenue Armory are captivated by the fascinating details of "Little Manhattan," where art and nature intertwine, offering them a unique and inspiring experience. This sculpture represents not only the iconic Manhattan but also the power of art and the artist's creativity.

Continuing to showcase unique works of art each year, the Park Avenue Armory makes a significant contribution to the city's art scene, opening doors to new discoveries in the enchanting world of art.
